Sample Courses

This course will comprehensively examine the real estate development & investment process. The curriculum will discuss the broad concepts and techniques employed in a successful real estate investment, both in new development and through acquisitions. The class will tackle specific components of a real estate asset and the individuals involved in successfully executing a project. We recommend that students without real estate experience take our introductory class, Real Estate Finance (FIN425/625).

This course presents information on investing in and valuing income-producing real estate in public companies and public debt instrument formats. It examines the relationship of project and entity valuation to various financial and performance metrics, sources and uses of capital, and management decisions. Direct investment concepts covered include cash flow analysis, net present value, internal rate of return, yield capitalization, and public market measures such as Funds From Operations and financial reporting via SEC filings. We recommend that students without real estate experience take our introductory class, Real Estate Finance

This course covers the contemporary principles of valuation, acquisition, financing, and financial management of real property. Emphasis is on the analytical techniques of mortgage lending, valuation, tax factors, investor objectives, and trends in the industry.

This course provides the advanced application of theory and techniques for analyzing the equity position in real estate ownership, utilizing readings and cases. It considers the impact of leverage, creative financing, and federal tax policies and concentrates on evaluating the basic productivity of real estate assets based on net cash flows. Particular attention is paid to the operation of the capital markets and portfolio theory. We recommend that students without real estate experience take our introductory class, Real Estate Finance (FIN425/625).

This course provides students with the essential legal knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complexities of real estate deals. Students will be introduced to fundamental legal terms and documentation used for real estate transactions and financing, with a focus on the legal aspects of how deals get done in the real world.

The course will provide an overview of the legal aspects of real estate transactions, financing, and leasing, and will touch subjects such as letter of intent, purchase and sale agreement, due diligence, the capital stack, equity and preferred equity, senior and mezzanine loans, as well as different entity structures like LLCs, LPs and corporations. In addition, basic leasing concepts and terms will be discussed across various asset classes. The course will also provide introductory looks at construction law, land use and zoning laws and other regulations, and dispute resolution (and avoidance) in the context of real estate.

This course is designed for business students who are ready to embark on their careers in real estate and professionals looking to build a foundational understanding of real estate law and transactions. By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of the foundational legal knowledge required to identify and avoid the most common pitfalls and legal issues that arise in real estate transactions, and the steps needed to safeguard their interests without creating unnecessary or unreasonable obstacles to closing their deals.

This course includes an introduction to the principles of real property analysis and use. Subjects include the nature of real estate and real property, principles of location theory, and an examination of the processes used to analyze the supply and demand for real estate. General methodologies for market studies are developed and then applied to the residential, retail, and office sectors. The course also explores demographic, technological, economic, and social trends that affect these real estate markets into the future. Techniques of spatial analysis are introduced.

This course explores the dynamic intersection of real estate and technology, focusing on how digital innovations reshape the industry. Students will comprehensively understand the real estate lifecycle, key players, and emerging technologies transforming traditional practices. The course will examine pain points, inefficiencies, and opportunities for innovation in the real estate sector while also analyzing the challenges faced by new technologies in gaining widespread adoption.

Through lectures, case discussions, guest speakers, and a field study, students will explore existing and emerging Protech solutions across various areas, including marketplaces, new asset classes, major functions, data analytics, and AI applications. Engagement with executives from PropTech startups and established real estate firms will provide real-world insights into the practical applications and challenges of implementing innovative solutions.
